I’ve seen this more with design-heavy resumes and scanned certificates stuck in the same PDF. The portal doesn’t care how nice it looks in Preview — it only cares about megabytes.
First, read the real limit
Some sites say 1MB. Others allow 2MB or 5MB. Check the tiny note under the upload box before you start compressing blindly. Knowing the target saves a round of guesswork.
Quick cleanup before you compress
If your PDF includes a full-page photo, a second version of the resume, or certificates the form didn’t ask for, pull those out. A one- or two-page text resume compresses much more cleanly than a five-page pack.
Also keep an original named something like resume-2026-08-original.pdf. Edit a copy. If the compressed file looks wrong, you still have the first one.
